Postgraduate School

The "Scuola di Specializzazione in Beni Archeologici di Matera" (Postgraduate School in Archaeological Goods) has been founded in the academic year 2010/2011 (Rector's Decree no. 657, November 19th 2010). It has replaced the "Scuola di Specializzazione in Archeologia", which had been founded in 1990/91 thanks to the former rector Cosimo Damiano Fonseca. Already at that time there were two principal fields of study (Classical Archaeology and Medieval Archaeology). The scope of the study program has always been to improve scientific skills in the archaeological field and to teach aspects of preservation and scientific analysis of the archaeological record. Every year up to 25 students are accepted (originally 15).

The new structure of the two year-Postgraduate program keeps principally to the ideas of the former “Scuola di Specializzazione in Archeologia”, though there have been some significant changes (according to “Decreto Ministeriale” 1/31/2006), concerning both study program and teaching staff. The new council of the Postgraduate School includes members of several departments and faculties of the university as well as external lecturers (for example from Università di Foggia, Direzione regionale per i Beni culturali e paesaggistici della Campania, Direzione regionale per i Beni culturali e paesaggistici della Calabria).

As in the past we are trying to maintain a high level of teaching quality, considering Postgraduate Schools important in order to guarantee adequate formation within an educational system that momentarily is being profoundly reformed. Excavation, fieldwork and laboratories are fundamental parts of our activities. The various research projects as well as events like expositions and congresses are possible thanks to an intense collaboration with the “Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici della Basilicata”.
